Question
How come my hydrangea doesn’t flower?
Answer
Is this a new hydrangea or one that has been in the ground for a year or more? There are many reasons why a hydrangea in the ground doesn’t flower. Pruning at the wrong time can cause future flower buds to be trimmed off. Hydrangeas in a shady location won’t produce as many flowers as ones with at least morning sun. Fertilizer high in nitrogen will grow lush foliage. Hydrangeas require a fertilizer that is higher in phosphorous (the middle number on the NPK ratio) than nitrogen to grow flowers. Also, not enough water will impact flowering. Take a look at our planting and care guide for tips on growing healthy hydrangeas that are full of flowers.
