Question

Did cutting flowers last year in the fall to dry in vases cause my hydrangeas to not produce any flowers this year?

Answer

It’s possible. Many hydrangeas flower on both old and new wood including Endless Summer Hydrangeas. With fall pruning, you run the risk of the cutting off some of the following year’s flowers. I prefer to leave some flowers on in the fall to give winter interest in the landscape. And, then only snip off those flower buds in early spring rather than prune off branches. Take a look at the Endless Summer Hydrangea pruning video for tips on when and how to prune. It also has advice for fertilizing and watering to help your hydrangea grow flowers on new wood.
