Question
IS IT NECESSARY TO COVER MY NEW HYDRANGEA TREE WHEN THE WEATHER GETS BELOW FREEZING? WHY DO THE BUDS FALL OFF SO EASILY?

Answer
Just like people, plants can get stressed when the temperature fluctuates back and forth between cold and warm. If your hydrangea tree has leaves and a freeze is coming, you can cover it with a sheet overnight. Be certain to remove the sheet the next day when the temperature warms up. If the leaves get nipped by a frost, chances are your tree will grow new leaves when the weather settles down. Did you have problems with buds falling off last year? If so, it was probably a lack of water due to a dry spell. Take a look at our hydrangea care guide for tips on keeping your hydrangea tree healthy all year long.
