Question

This summer I purchased a French Cabaret Blush hibiscus I live in Wisconsin and would like to know how to winterize it. We love it so

Answer

The First Editions’ Planting and Care guide is a great resource for tips on overwintering plants. Hibiscus are hardy shrubs in zone 5 gardens and the first step is to give it a good soaking going into winter. Then, mulch well at the base. Protecting the roots is the most important thing with your hibiscus; especially, this first winter. You will want to be patient in the spring as hibiscus are late to leaf out. They seem to know that there is no hurry to put on leaves in early spring. Summer is when they are the stars of the garden.
