Question

How do I take care of a Crapemyrtle trees?

Answer

In zone 6 gardens, it’s is best to let your crapemyrtle finish flower in the fall and skip pruning off the old flower heads. Give them a good soaking going into winter and mulch around the base to help protect the roots from freezing. Be patient in the spring as it will take a little while for the crapemyrtle to push new growth. The severity of the winter and early spring freezes will determine the amount of winter dieback. Once you see new leaves, you will know how far back to prune the tops. In zone 6 gardens, crapemyrtles usually start flowering around the first of July.
