Question

I’M MOVING MY NINEBARK TO A MORE SUNNY SPACE, DO I NEED TO PRUNE IT?

Answer

I’m glad you are going to move your ninebark to a sunny spot.

Amber Jubilee matures to about 5-6’ x 4’. Will the new place in your garden have enough room for it to grow to that size? If so, that would be best and then you won’t have to worry about pruning. All in all, spring is a great time to prune ninebarks. And, fortunately, they are forgiving if you make a mistake. Are you pruning it to make it easier to move? Cutting it back a third or so will make it easier to handle. And, go ahead and cut out any dead or broken branches. If the interior needs to be thinned out some, this is also a great time to clean up the middle of the shrub. When digging it up, take good care of the roots and water well. Healthy roots will help it recover quickly from the stress of moving.
