Question

I have a reblooming lilac that only blooms once in the early spring. How do I get it to rebloom?

Answer

Reblooming lilacs are such a treat in the garden! To get the most out of your late-season blooms, give it a little bit of a trim after the first set of blooms finish in spring to clean it up. The next set of blooms all come from new growth, so directing the plant’s energy on new blooms versus turning the first blooms into seed heads will help. Making sure that the plant is well watered and in at least 6 hours of sun will also help. You’d also be helping the plant by giving it a little bit of fertilizer after that first set of blooms to give it some extra energy to produce more flowers late in the season.
